In Ljungan's valley lies Ljungaverk, one of the major industrial towns in Swedish chemical industry in the 1950s and 60s. Sweden’s first fully synthetic fiber, Tacryl, was developed here. A report in Dagbladet mentioned that the new fiber provided “comfortable, durable, and easy-to-care-for clothing and textiles.” In Ljungaverk's various factories, products such as lime nitrogen, silicon metal, ammonia, synthetic rubber, and nitric acid have been manufactured. The nitric acid was used, among other things, to produce explosives – hence the site was strictly guarded during World War II. Today the industrial era is over, but Ljungaverk's industrial area lives on. Older buildings remain and now house businesses like haulage companies and carpentries. Ljungaverk is also the site where the music festival Ljungarocken takes place.
